Anne Milton MP

Anee was re-elected MP for Guildford with a 7,782 majority on 6 May 2010

Anne's Experience as an MP

Anne became involved in politics in the early 1990's, though in the past she was a union steward for the Royal College of Nursing and involved in the National Childbirth Trust after that. Anne got involved in politics because she believes that if we truly want to represent the people of this country, and the issues that people face day after day, we need people from a wide range of backgrounds in the House of Commons.

She believes that we need people with front line experience of the public sector working in Parliament. Anne believes that as a nurse and working mother, with many years experience in the NHS and local government she brings a fresh approach to politics. She believes that many people are disillusioned with politicians and she is determined to show people that she can bring a new set of values and skills to Parliament.

Before being elected as an MP Anne was a borough councillor for five years in Surrey. She was Conservative Group Leader, a member of the South East Regional Assembly, Vice Chairman of the Conservative Medical Society and ran an innovative new project in Conservative Central Office on the 2001 general election campaign.

People are at the heart of Anne's politics and she believes her job as a politician is to stand up and fight for local people's needs and ensure that their views get heard in Parliament.

In November 2006, Anne was appointed Shadow Minister for Tourism in the Department of Culture, Media and Sport team. In July 2007, she was appointed as a Shadow Minister for Health.

About Anne

Anne was born in 1955, is married to Graham (who is a doctor) and has four children. She was educated at Haywards Heath Grammar School in Sussex, and trained as a nurse at St Bartholomew's Hospital in London. Anne worked for the NHS for 25 years. Anne has a wide range of experience in the NHS. She has nursed in hospitals, as a district nurse (and yes, with a bicycle!), worked in research and supporting GPs and nurses working in palliative care. She also pioneered a scheme to look after people who were sent home early from hospital. Her last job in the NHS was to give medical advice to councils and housing associations.

Anne loves gardening, has been a keen runner (although better on stamina than speed!), and is an avid reader, although her family are at the heart of her life. With two children still at school and two at University Anne relies on them to keep her in tune with all the issues that come up for young people.

Anne has lived in Surrey since 1994 with her family and was thrilled to have been elected as Member of Parliament in May 2005. Having been bought up in Sussex she understands only too well the problems facing the South East in general and Guildford in particular.

Campaigning on...

Guildford is a great place to live and work but there now hangs a huge threat over local NHS services. To plug budget deficits the local health authority is reviewing acute hospital services across Surrey. The Royal Surrey County Hospital is now in the frame for possible closure of its A&E, maternity services and paediatrics, and complete closure of RSC has even been rumoured. Anne has called for the political parties to unite in the campaign to save Royal Surrey and the fight is now on. Public consultation is expected to start in January 2007.

Anne has also called on the Government to end its unfair funding of the NHS in Surrey and is chairing the Surrey MPs' Campaign to call the Government to account and ensure that local people get the NHS services they need and deserve.

Guildford is also under enormous economic and environmental pressure. The Government wants huge numbers of new houses to be built and local concern is rising about the impact this would have on the countryside, water supply and the already congested traffic. Sustainable solutions are needed that give people affordable homes within the urban centres whilst ensuring that there is proper investment into public transport, environmentally sustainable ways of dealing with our rubbish and much more decisions made at a local level by local people. Our countryside needs protecting.

Local schools, the NHS staff and the police work enthusiastically with local people. The schools and the local NHS have some of the best results in the country. But concerns about the future of Cranleigh Village Hospital remain with the beds and day hospital already having been closed. Anne has received an assurance that this will be relooked at when the future of Royal Surrey is considered.

Crime is low and the lowest in the country but with a very lively nightlife, anti-social behavior continues to be a problem in some areas.
